Due to the life getting in the way, I found myself having to rush out to drop some packages off to UPS. Without paying attention, I left my house without paying attention to my outfit. I was wearing a pair of flats and feminine style shorts, but otherwise dressed as a man.
Needing to ship the packages, I walked confidently into the UPS center with confidence like my outfit was not out of the ordinary. Interacting with a few customers and employees, no one seemed to take offense or comment. That, however, changed when I found myself waiting for an employee to research a missing label. Another customer inquired if I had narrow feet which I don’t. Confused my her comment, we spoke for several minutes about my shoes. I think she may have mistaken my flats for loafers as she also brought up a fashion designer with which I am vaguely familiar and his preference of footwear. I am not sure if she knew I was wearing feminine footwear or not. Either way, it was a pleasant conversation.
Great story Mackenzie. It just shows most people don’t even notice when we are wearing some femminne clothing. Sometimes were our own worst critic
Thanks for sharing. I often wear flats with guy clothes out, sometimes with black knee-his so that they’re sort of hidden with my pants, or often with nude knee-his so they’re more obvious. It’s rare that anyone even hints that they noticed. Guys don’t seem to notice (or try to act too cool/macho to show they noticed). Women usually don’t comment.
Shoe salesgirls definitely notice and often give me encouragng comments. I’ve gotten to know a couple of the salesgirls in one store I frequent and it seems that their comments are genuine, not just thinking of their potential commission. I’ve started to find that there are more women who do notice and are okay with a guy in flats.
A confident walk and smile, along with conversation, are great ways to distract people from just staring at their feet (or ours).
You’ve reached a great milestone, even if it wasn’t exactly planned. It’s those good experiences that help us venture further out each time, wearing just a little bit more (or less), and showing the world around us that we can look good in women’s shorts and shoes and they wouldn’t even notice.
