The call that I had waited for came early Sunday morn-
One that I had known would come since the day she first was born.
Her words spilled forth in torrents as she shrieked “I am engaged”!
And though I was ecstatic, I felt suddenly more aged.

The baby girl I always knew was suddenly all grown
And things would never be the same as I had always known.
No longer would I be the man she loved above all other-
The hugs that had been mine alone now given to another.

I cannot wait ‘til we walk down the church’s central aisle
And as I place her hand in his I’ll do my best to smile.
But I’ll admit that smile will have to share my face with tears.
My mind remembering holding her for oh so many years.

The love I feel for her cannot by anyone be bound
And as I hear her say “I do”, I’m sure you’ll hear the sound
Of silent sobbing from my heart; as she becomes his wife
And starts upon the journey that will be her married life.

The happy couple greet the guests in the reception line-
We’ll have the father-daughter dance and then it will be time.
Her husband is a lucky man for he has won her heart
And then upon their honeymoon too soon they will depart.

And I’ll return to my own home, reflecting on the past-
The memories so fleeting as before my eyes they passed.
For God has surely blessed me more than any other father-
The gift he gave me long ago- my one and only daughter!

I wish them every happiness and years so filled with joy.
And though I’m sure that sometimes they each other will annoy,
The love they have will get them through the hardest times with ease
As long as they remember to spend time down on their knees.

For God is surely part of any happy wedded pair
And where His love is present there need never be despair.
And there can be no happier man in the entire world
Than this old man who’ll always love his precious baby girl!

What you wrote is lovely.  I have walked two of my daughters down the aisle.  It was a joy – yes.  But the tears spilled forth.  I couldn’t help it.  But you can also look forward to one of the greatest joys this life can hold.  –  Grandchildren!!!!

      – love and hugs

That brought tears to my eyes, but I have two grandsons from two wonderful young girls. It is worth the tears.

With three “baby girls” Cyn I feel your sentiments deeply.

Only one have I given away in marriage and, sadly, despite the fervent prayers of those who do so, the marriage failed and the relationship became acrimonious. Still, theological discussions are for another time and for another place.

Embrace their happiness Cyn. Encourage and support them but remind them that all good things are worth safeguarding with hard work and good communications.

Oh, and take it from one who knows, she will still always be your ‘baby girl’, no matter how long she is married and how many grandchildren come along.

Best wishes to all of you.

      🙂
