New SCI-FI Series Tackles Gender Issues

I’m a Sci-Fi geek, but please don’t let that get out!  Anyway, I have been anxiously awaiting the new sci fi series created by Seth McFarlane.  It is now airing on Fox, Thursday nights.  The first episode I had the chance to watch was episode 3, which by unique coincidence, involved a gender related plot line.

One of the ship’s crew members is from a planet where all inhabitants are male, and as it turns out, when a female is born, she is subjected to gender reassignment surgery to make her conform.  It was an interesting take on gender identity.

The show, called “Orville” (after the name of the space-ship), is supposed to be a parody of other sci-fi shows, but this episode, while having its funny moments, hit seriously on the topic of gender identity.
