Runaway Train

I wrote this many years ago as I was dealing with a difficult breakup. The concept is around truth hurling down at you like a runaway train. Hope you enjoy!

 

Runaway Train

The train is coming…can you hear it?

She doesn’t see it coming, but she can feel it.

She turns her back to it, hoping it won’t come.

But it’s too late. Letting go. Feeling numb.

 

Pumping steam, grinding metal.

The smell, the sound, the beating anvil.

Picking up speed, it thrusts ahead

Set in motion by thoughts and dread.

 

Standing on the platform…it won’t be long.

To embark this train. To right the wrong.

Fear…reprieve…stalling the thought

To express the words that I have fought

 

The whistle blows, it’s not slowing down.
It’s coming for me…she hears it now.

 

I can still walk away, there is still time.
I’ve escaped before, committed the crime
But the train never stops or disappears.
It just waits for you throughout the years.

 

For your time on the platform.

I glance in her eyes one last time.
Finding innocence…peace…love of mine.
That will change. It’s inescapable.

For its strength and power is unmistakable.

I can feel the hot steel, the grease and sweat.
The smell of coal burning, the unceasing threat.

It has come for me.

I’m almost free.

I embrace the moment, let go of my fears.

Grieve what I have lost and dry my tears.

We finally embark let go of our youth;

And accept what has arrived…this instrument of truth.
