It seems having the King, as top dog, is sexist (though there seems to be no problem with the Queen lording (whoops! is that sexist?) over poor old Jack.
Now as we can’t have female clothes (clothes are genderless, they are women’s garments.). Surely then playing cards don’t have a gender either?
Isn’t it just replacing one hierarchy with another – just changing labels? Gold (the King?) is superior to, and looks down on Silver ( The Queen?) etc?
Is it just WOKE nonsense?
Is it a candidate for Piers Morgan’s “The Worlds Gone Mad!” accolade – “has she got nothing better to do?”
What next? Chess sets? The King replaced by ??? The Queen (who is more powerful than the King) also replaced with ???
Are we going to have to smash up the Lewis Chess Set to please some gender activists?
Are you going to replace yours?
Is this a justified step towards gender equality? Or does it just annoy people and do us no good?

Well I think these political correct morons should take a look at the hidden sexual messages in chess. The bishops are trying to take the Queen, the knights are trying to take bishop , the Queen will take anything, and they are all trying to stuff the king. Plus they are all doing this by watching pawn in front of them self.

The Hershey stuff is an abomination! Ever year I hope that you all will take back Cadbury and do good chocolates again! Please! I knew the world was going to heck in a hand basket when you sold out to them! In fact I have stopped buying any Hershey products in protest, but they don’t seem to noticed my effort as yet! Oh well only somewhat off topic but a reflection of the world gone mad.

I can’t dispute your assessment, though FUBAR is mostly reserved for situations (such as social or political). It’s a derivative of SNAFU, “Situation normal…. I was expressing an opinion about the game, itself – or the “logic” behind it. We have many “colorful” terms for things, places and situations in military life, some of which cross the PG line, and cannot be used here.

The King! The King! I do enjoy chess, but that’s a next to useless piece that must be protected because its … weak, and useless. Better off without him. If the Queen was smart, she would dump him, lol. I’ll keep my set, Political correctness drives me batty. What’s next, manhole covers will become people hole covers? 😅 accurate, but a bit silly.

Gee. just call them 13, 12, 11 for heaven’s sake with the appropriate number of symbols. I’d rather play with those then gold silver whatever. Yes, it’s woke and like any ‘movement’ with the number of people in the world and easy access to communication, lots of possibilities will always be shown to be available. It isn’t that this woman is making new cards, that’s been going on for ages, it’s that some media wonk decided to run with the story, probably to get wildly different reactions so more people would subscribe to whatever service is running it and they can get more hits for their ads and make more money. That’s what it really all comes down to. Thinking about it, tho, I give her credit, she’ll probably make a few bucks selling to those who seriously lack critical thinking skills, but, well, that’s the way of the world today, sad to say. $$$$$$$.

Cadbury is an ancient hill fort in Dorset or somewhere nearby.
Chocolate is very poisonous to dogs. My daughter’s fiancee’s family dog (a Labrador called Guiness) scoffed a whole large bar of Cadbury’s dairy Milk and suffered no ill effects! What does that tell you ………….

The nature of the pieces is a result of the historical development of the game over time reflecting the hierarchies of the time over time and I suggest should be seen in that light. More importantly to me is that one rarely sees mention of female chess players in the media. I Googled female chess players and found that there are currently 37 female grand masters and 119 female international masters. Yet the common perception of a chess player seems to be a nerdy guy with few social skills.
There seems to me no reason why females cannot excel at chess. And as an aside I think that applies to both snooker and darts!

Just think… for all the nerdy types there are an equal number of nerdy matching types out there… who knows where this will lead?In my experience, women excel at men in most things requiring technique as they have no such word as ‘try’ in their vocabulary. Men suffer badly from that bloody word ‘try’ because it translates into ‘TRY’!
Women, on the other hand just ‘do’… big, significant difference, eh?My Grandmother taught me that. A she could do most things that would make a modern woman blanch!
The easiest sports people I have coached have undoubtedly been women as they have another way of overcoming the strength factor.Must stop here xx Polly

Case in point… women’s Rugby! The women have beaten men’s teams especially in Sevens.
My darling wife was a competitive cyclist that I first met through coaching and she could give men a drubbing on occasion. Another female cyclist I coached, creamed an elite men’s field in a very hilly race! I had to drive my open top just to go on hill work rides with her!
Megan Rapinoe has been an outstanding example to us ALL for being successful in a tough sport! Love her…

I kind of thought that Europe might be immune to the ‘Woke’ PC madness, but I was wrong. How about instead of being ‘Woke’, we actually tried to be awake. They can’t even use proper English (is that nationalistic?) to get their point across, and they think they are the educated ones. LMAO at this one.
Does this mean that I am no longer a Duchess here? We are running pretty low on sanity it seems. For safety sake, hide all the sharp and pointy things so they don’t hurt themselves and sue someone.

Hurry up and get your name on the chess idea, before someone else does it first! There are so many more hierarchies to topple in chess, after all; bishops wielding the oppressive legacy of the church for political ends, knights and their militarism, all brought to bear on hapless pawns, sacrificed in the name of their own survival. In the new chess where the pawns join with their class brothers and sisters and take control the means of production there will be no need for kings, nor churches, nor armies. You may say that Im a dreamer. But I’m not the only one.
When I hear about things like this I tend to think the odds are 50-50 that it is satire gone wrong, some person who is as exasperated as I am musing on what happens when justice is overapplied and accidentally discovering how serious the joke is. Makes me sarcastically wish that being enterprising about it came more naturally to me.
oh and I don’t suppose anyone has stopped to think about how silver must feel about this? Her subjugation to gold is rather unscientific, no less a social construct than woman to man, just about the oldest, most backwards looking one in the book and based on color no less!!

Hi Stephanie, this is the first I’ve heard of it. Yes, a total bit of nonsense. If they really, really need to make genderless playing cards rather than replacing one set of arbitrary order (King, Queen, Jack) with another set of arbitrary order (Gold, Silver, Bronze), just keep the numerical order going (eleven, twelve, thirteen). Clearly I’m not in favour of this but if people with a lot of time on their hands come up with this quackery, at least put more thought into it. Certainly appreciate Grace’s take on it as well. Spending my evenings binge watching “The Crown” on Netflix. How about the Prince Consort? Stay healthy, All the Best, Hugs, Krista.
