I have yet to choose a name for myself when I am dressed as a woman. how is the best way to choose a name for one self? Do you let someone else choose it? There’s one guy at work that calls me Shirley because he heard about me wearing women clothes. I have thought about using that name but I’m not comfortable with that particular name though. Any suggestions, ladies?

You seem to be using one already. I say just make it easy and stick with that one.

I was chatting with a member on here and she suggested it to me. I liked it a lot and now I’ll be using it now.

Rachel’s a good name.
I always liked the name Jessica. It felt so warm and safe to me. So when I signed up and needed a name to use Jessica was it. The charms part could be either my personality, but a lot of folks would assume something else from my pictures. It’s actually an Homage to Chelsea Charms.
But your name is special, sure you might change it down the road, but it’s the name you felt best suited your female self. Its the name you see when you look at her. Its like a parent naming there child, it’s how they see it.
Rachel suits you, Because you picked it. It means something to you.

The best advice I have heard is to ask your mother what your name would have been if you had been born with girl parts.

Your name is important to you. It is who you are. if you are choosing your own name make it your name, own it, It is who you are. I am Paula, I choose the name and it is MY NAME. I was given a different name by my parents, that name is important to me as well. but this name I chose.
I like the the name you are using now. Rachel is a beautiful name with lots of history and great women who have used it with pride.

Hi Rachel!
Names come with connotations, resonances of people we’ve met, the way they sound, and what they mean. For me, Timea was the naughty side, a feminized version of my given name; Jane is a very girlie name for me, more modest, like a pretty gingham skirt. The last name West was a nod to Mae West. Timea Jane sounds like I feel en femme: flirty, pretty, happy, playful. Enjoy exploring names that are beautiful to you echo your girl.

There is no best way. It is up to the individual.
The most common ways I have heard are these. Some people choose a feminine version of their masculine name. Some people choose a feminine name that begins with the same letter or first few letters of their masculine name or has a few letters in common. Some people choose a feminine name because they knew someone with that name, and they liked or admired her or the way she dressed or acted. And some people choose a feminine name because they heard that name and liked it a lot.

Hi Rachel . Your name What people say when they want your attention or how you want to be addressed is now up to you. I think Rachel is a good strong very feminine name. There is no doubt about the gender I am addresing. Luv Stephanie

Hi Rachel,
I don’t know if there is a best way. In my case I didn’t really think about it until I decided to join CDH. For my first name I looked at lists of female baby names. Autumn jumped out to me as a pretty name and I had seen it somewhere recently just before that so it kinda grabbed me. As for my last name I gave that some thought. I decided I wanted a name that expressed bravery since I was feeling afraid. Afraid of joining a CD site, afraid of people finding out….. so I used an online thesaurus looking for words that mean brave. I agree with Paula Here. Rachel is a pretty name. But it’s up to you to decide what name you want. You won’t be the first lady here to change your name.
Hugs
Autumn

I have always liked that. There is something about the name my mother would have given me. Mine would have been Heather Lenore. I am only OK with Heather. But Lenore just feels right. So I think it is Lenore. For now. 🙂

Think of a female you either know or have admired, eg some variety of celebrity and “adopt” their name…

Hi Rachel. Picking your fem name can be the most personable desision you can make, Rachel is a nice very fem name. Everyone here has already given you great advice, all I can do is tell you how I picked my name. 40 years ago when I first was heavy into CD I picked Cassandra Joyce Jayson. Cassandra was from a character I liked at that time. Jayson is a form of my middle name. I picked Joyce because I liked the idea of Joy as part of my CD activity. Here on CDH I decided to go by Sandy (Cassandra) partly because it rhymes with my given name Randy. For yourself pick something that you feel is right for you.

My first girl name was Debbie Daniels. It was the first and last mane of two girls I really admired. I became Patty Phose when some girls began teasing me about me always wearing nice and shiny pantyhose. They began calling me Panty Hose. Then it kind of morphed into Patty Pantyhose and eventually Patty Hose.

Lol Caitlin,
I always heard that was the formula for your alter-ego porn name. If that’s the case, my name would be Ginger Nicholson.
Luv, Cindy

Porn name/real name, either way, it worked out pretty well for me. My first pet’s name was Katie, so I changed it up a little by giving it a Gaelic twist, Cáitlín. And I grew up on Priest St.
I like Ginger Nicholson, I think it suits you.

I chose the name of the woman I was with when I “lost my innocence” at the tender young age of 13 or 14. Even though I love my wife dearly and have always been a faithful husband , “Linda Rose” and the memory of my ‘first time’ will always have a special place in my heart.

I had never even considered the name Amber until a few days before I joined CDH. When I first joined a crossdressers/tramsgendered site I chose Shari Ann Greenfield. A few years later, when I started identifying as an androgyne I chose Casey Morgan Danvers. I play a lot of role playing games, both online and offline, and I found that the first female character I created in a new game (I play a mix of male and female characters) I named Amber. If that was taken I tried Amber Lynn. I decided that I must really like the name so on those rare times when I use a womans name when I’m crossdressed I go by Amber Lynn Dolan. (And since that name is now personal I name my characters Merri after TV producer Merri D. Howard.)

Hey girls,
Interestingly, I initially considered the name Rachel, as this is what my parents said that is what they would have called me had I been born a girl. However, main inspiration came from a spy book I read in my teens. In it, the main character was advised that when undercover, to reduce the risk of slipping up, most spy keep the first letter of their own name. So I took a look at a list of female names starting with ‘I’ and after a process of elimination got to Isabel. But at the end of the day, whatever you think yourself.
Hugs,
Isabel

I gave myself several femme names before choosing Roberta. They ranged from Sharon,Denise,Andrea. It wasn’t until I got to my forties that I finally landed on Roberta.Just seemed to be a nice name for the woman I craved to be.I thought of it on a Sunday evening before going to work the next day.Probably the product of one of my dry spells.I had a lot of those back then before I finally stopped purging. My accepting wife calls me Roberta when I am dressed. She loves the name which makes it especially gratifying.

I wouldn’t let that knob name you. I adapted my own name. It took a while but I found a femme name that was me, and I was comfortable with. It’s not an overnight project. You will get there shug.

Hi Rachel,
Great question, with as many answers as there are members on this site. Only you can know for sure what feels right. Personally, I love the name Rachel.
I can tell you my process… Cindy was the name of my first crush in grade school. I became Cindy 40+ years ago. Jones was a coin-toss between Jones and Smith because I wanted to be super anonymous. Since those early days, some of my online friends started calling me CJ, which I felt was a wonderful term of endearment. I’ve since added the middle name of Jocelyn to make the moniker of CJ Jones a little more “official”. So… the long form is now Cynthia Jocelyn Jones. But, I will forever be Cindy Jones.
Another fun thing to do… Cross check your name (or potential name) on UrbanDictionary.com
