This shot isn't today's, although I dearly wish it was! The history of my middy dress is a fun one to read up on. A British account attributes the origins to Queen Victoria in 1846, who had an outfit tailored aboard a royal yacht for her son Albert Edward, mainly as a surprise for her husband, who liked it so much that he had a painting commissioned which in turn began the trend among the upper class. On the American side it was widely known as a Peter Thomson dress, after the naval tailor who first popularized the style here in the early 1900's. There is a Peter Thomson collection at the Met in NYC. I suppose the differences in attribution are only appropriate?

I'm a happily married, 40+ suburbanite who spends nearly all of my time doing fairly typically suburbanite things. From the outside I don't think it would look like anything that distinguished, but from the inside, I love seeing the life I have and the people and relationships and places in it all developing and changing. Dressing didn't figure in until well after that story began, so each storyline has been adapting to the other. Although I first dabbled in intermediate school with one of my sisters dresses, I didn't dress at all after that until I rediscovered it about 10 years ago, and have been learning little by little and finding new happiness in it continually as I go. I'll always keep trying new styles and silhouettes, but I feel like the way I dress now is pretty close to the final form it will take--when I have time and space that I can do a complete job of it, and be immersed in it, and only as often as circumstances allow for that. However, in crossdressing as in life, as difficult as it can be for us, whether in long term relationships or trying to find others like yourself, the more you share the more will come back to you.

Thank you, Jill, for the beautiful vintage dress photos! You look lovely, dear, as always. So, at your urging, I did do some reading, on the Peter Thomson dress. Very interesting! As a career retired US Navy CPO, I was somewhat even more motivated to learn more. I wore that classic sailor suit for 18 years, until I finally ditched it, when I made Chief Petty Officer. In Japan, school girls wear the sailor-type uniform. Anyway, you look real pretty, as always!

Absolutely lovely, Jill and really appreciate the history lesson as well. Although when I first read the line, “…who had an outfit tailored aboard a royal yacht for her son Albert Edward…” my first impression was like…I had no idea Albert was a cross dresser. Of course not (well, as far as we know tee hee), but the way it’s worded does leave room for alternate interpretations. And brings to mind a variation on the old joke, “Do you have Prince Albert in a…dress? Well, let him come out…” OK, I better stop now…I’m afraid my sense of humor is… Read more »
