Stockings nd garter belt are preferred as it is easier to use the bathroom and also because I think it is more ladylike. That being said I also wear pantyhose with shorter dresses and skirts. In the winter/cooler weather I will underdress in tights when taking the dog for a walk in the morning for the added warmth.
