Up to now I have been managing with my own hair grown out in a gender neutral style; as part of my birthday online shopping bingette I managed to buy a cheap wig – it was a large cap one (style Sky from Rene of Paris). I picked it up from the collection point in a shop on my birthday along with some clothes I ordered. I had to wait a couple of days for an opportunity to dress again.
I had an hour or so while my SO was out. It was another very hot day; before trying on my wig I checked out the clothes I ordered as well – tried on and put away – I kept outlay new sleeveless summer dress to wear for the session. It was so nice to have a dress suitable for the day that was a nice style and that fitted me – pleased with that purchase.
After cooling down for a while (thank goodness for the large fan I have), I was ready to try the wig – it didn’t fit – rookey mistake I hadn’t adjusted the wig cap straps – suitably tweaked I tried again – yay ! wow what a difference, I looked 10 years younger. Wearing the wig didn’t send me euphoric, I just felt natural with it on – the style and colour suits me. I think the wig will make a good one to start with and I’ll keep an eye out for another one perhaps a bit longer in length.
Since then I have had my SO cut my hair a bit shorter due to the hot weather, but it will mean the wig will fit without showing my own hair – I’ll be wearing the wig during my next crossdressing session, hopefully I’ll have time to go out.

Congrats Alicen! It’s so exciting to get your first wig, I just got mine about 4 months ago.
I have the Felicity by Rene of Paris. I should have got the Large cap as well but honestly didn’t know about cap sizes when I bought it. But adjusted out fully it’s livable. I’m still waiting on the cleaner and conditioner to arrive. I want to care for it properly, they say a wig will last a year. I always hope that’s based on constant use and that mine will last much longer.

My own hair is also long enough to go without a wig, but I need to clip on bangs to cover my forehead. Even just the addition of bangs changes the way I look. However, I haven’t been to the hair salon for 18 months, and my hair is in desperate need of a color to remove the grey. Also, my hair, although long, is extremely fine, and lacks volume.
So unless I’m going somewhere I need to worry about the wig coming off (like going to the beach), I usually wear a wig. I usually get something similar to how I wear my hair: dark brown, straight, between the shoulder blades in length. But it feels so much better, framing my face, being thicker than my own hair, and really changes my face. I don’t mind it even on very hot humid days, even with a pair of headphones on top.
I suspect that cis women change their hair style for a similar reason. Changing the style really changes the face. Changing the color does even more so.
Have fun with your new wig.
