Macy's Loves CrossdressersA few weeks ago you shared your favorite crossdresser friendly stores with me. Thanks for all your submissions so far! Many of you ladies raved about a store I dearly love (a bit too much according to my wife 🙂 ). Macy’s is the transgender friendly store to shop at!

If you look in my closet you’ll find tops and skirts I’ve purchased there. Their clothes fit well, look great and I always have a positive experience out shopping. Best of all, Macy’s makes it easy to avoid a common crossdressing pitfall – choosing inappropriate clothes. Macy’s has a selection of clothes to fit all ages and styles. You don’t have to look frumpy just because your figure is slightly larger than most woman.

Okay, enough of my glowing review, I thought I’d share two more perspectives on Macy’s.

Deena wrote me a glowing review recommending Macy’s:

I have shopped at Macy's department stores and found them to be very helpful in finding the right size and look in clothing. They are very understanding with the transgendered and crossdressing community. Also they are very supportive in the Pride Day festival as they realize that the GLBT community has a economical benefit in the communities they serve.

Petra even wrote an article describing her positive experience with Macy’s

I want to give a particularly warm (and hopefully not overly familiar) hug to our friends at Macy’s - the Grand Old Lady of department stores. Sales Assistants have been helpful and just nicely curious about my shopping,en femme and in drab. When I have been in a Macy’s wearing a Macy’s dress, it gets noticed by staff. On 2 separate occasions an SA has excitedly told me that I look terrific and that they appreciate that I am a Macys customer. Online, my reviews have been published quickly, and weirdly, other customers have found them helpful.

Thank you Macy’s! Take a moment to browse their selection of women’s clothes. I’m sure you’ll find something you love!

Dear Vanessa,

Thanks so much for this post. I hope that all your readers take note and shop openly where welcomed. It is important as well that we do not subsidize ignorance and ill-will by shopping furtively or by shopping where we are not welcomed.

I realize that many of the CD/TG set simply cannot shop openly for themselves (en femme or in drab) but for those of us that can, we can make our numbers felt, and really help advance the frontiers of acceptance when we do. Easy steps (once you chase the butterflies away) -

The garment is for you --- say so, do not beat around the bush. Most Sales Assistants have already figured it out, and appreciate honesty.
Be respectful of the store environment. You are their guest, so dress appropriately, and ask permission for the use of the fitting rooms.
Share your findings with friends...

Thanks again Vanessa! Happy shopping..

The customer service employees at online stores that cater to plus sized women know we make up a large part of their business. I shop regularly at Catherines, Lane Bryant , Woman Within and Full Beauty and could not be treated nicer. One time after rating some of their products, they contacted me. After determining I was male I filled out the longest survey I've ever taken. Where upon they sent me a 40% off coupon and now they contact me using my femme name asking specific questions about certain purchases. No man's store ever did that!

Dear Vanessa,

When I was 15 years old, I came out that I was a crossdresser, I had a lot of help from my understanding and supportive mother, sister and aunts. I have been living full time as young women for the past ten years with little regrets.

Woman’s fashion is never boring, the fashions change with the seasons, the styles, materials are endless. My mother, sister or Aunts go shopping a lot of the time with me, which relieves some of the stress of buying clothes.

I found finding woman’s clothes that fit can be hard, the sizes are different depending on the outfit, designer, most woman’s clothes are too small around the chest, too large around the hips and too small around the waist.

When I ordered things on line, it was challenging although most of the on line sellers have taken better care in providing better size charts, the style or material wasn’t what you expected, the on line outfits always look so perfect and sometimes they are. Another good place to surf for outfits and things is Ebay.

At one time it was rather challenging being a man shopping in the woman’s section or store very stressful at times. Although when I go out its rare I don’t pass for a women sometimes my voice may slip and it’s give away.

I do a lot of traveling I was down south visiting an Aunt, and I was out shopping by myself and went past a “Catherines” and did some window shopping. I saw some great looking outfits; I was embarrassed to go in myself to shop. I was going to wait and have my Aunt come shopping with me.

I decided rather than go home to telephone the store and explain the situation to avoid any possible issues. It so happened an Assistant Manager Kristin answered the phone.

I was completely stunned how Kristin was incredibly nice told me how there would be no issues to come right in to shop. She told me she was the Assistant Manager and to ask for her and she would be delighted to help me in any way.

It took me about a half-hour to build up my confidence to go shopping by myself, I walked past the Catherines store a couple of times, and then I took a deep breath and walked in. I asked for girl at the checkout would Kristin be available. She came up front and I said I was Jacqueline and we had spoke on the phone.

She complimented me how beautiful I looked and made me feel so much at ease. We started at the dresses and we looked threw them, the part of this that was interesting was how professional she was treating me as an equal and sharing her opinion if it looked good or bad.

When I shop, I basically shop till I drop if I like something I buy it. We picked out a dozen plus dresses the selection was outstanding. I went to put them on a rack to buy and I was totally surprised Kristin said you have to try them on to see how they look and fit how the material is. If it doesn’t look good on you here it’s not going to look good when you leave.

She took the dresses to the dressing room and told me how I was just another customer I had the same right to try on the clothes before I bought them, if your not going to be happy I won’t be making the sale.

I spent three hours shopping with Kristin, picking out everything and making sure everything was just right, helping me on with outfits all my purchases fit like a glove and I couldn’t have been happier with the attention and service.

When I was leaving Kristin said to come in anytime, I know it was a sincere offer not based on my significant purchases. The following day I did stop back with some gifts for Kristin and sales people, although the gifts were not necessary I wanted to show my appreciation, I also wrote corporate office.

Over the past years when I go down south to visit my Aunt I always stop in to see Kristin and we have become good friends and stay in touch in and out of the store.

Goes to show that business is made up of the people you see behind the counter with just a small hint of decision making from the top that you don’t ever see.

I found giving a courtesy call before going shopping goes a long way, you don’t have salesgirls freaking out on the inside helping you. I’ve shopped Catherines one Lane Bryant offered to open early or stay late if I felt more comfortable. I was truly overwhelmed how stores are more accommodating accepting a crossdresser as an equal customer.

Until reading your site I would have never thought of Macys but after reading about them I called about shopping and they were delighted to serve me.

Being a crossdresser isn’t easy at times most of us have paid our dues to be able to be accepted as an equal, equal rights to dress and be accepted as a women with no fuss. As far as shopping I spend a fortune each year and deserve the same rights as all women.

My best advice is to go for it, go shopping and dress beautiful we earned it like the rest to dress the best. If your happy shopping at a store let the corporate office know about your experience I found it goes a long way.

Vanessa having this site is so much inspiring.

Well, I have never called a store before going shopping. I shop anywhere I decide to shop. Please don't think I think I am better than anyone because I am not. I feel for the people that say they don't look like a female. I know it has to be hard for them. I am only sharing my experiences.

I do not like to shop online. Not at all. The only article I would think about buying online is shoes because I know my size and it seems like shoe sizes don't change with the designer. The reason I don't like to buy clothes online is because I can't try them on before buying. I would hate the hassel of buying, returning, buying again. Clothing can be hard to buy the right size because they are not all sized the same. A size 12 dress isn't always a size 12 dress. Also, if you are planning to wear a corset or girdle with an outfit you want to make sure to buy the right size outfit. So, for that reason I prefer to buy in store so I can try them on. Now, when I buy tops, I don't usually have to try them on. I can look at them and hold them up to me to see if they fit. You can't do that online. I do have to try on jeans, skirts, dresses, etc. Oh, I also don't have to try on bras. I know my size and they always fit right off the rack.
As far as calling ahead before going to a store, like I said I have never done that. Before I came out publicly, what I used to do was, say I wanted to buy a pair of jeans. I would go to a store, estimate my size, buy them and go home to try them on. To my, it was a lot easier to drive back to the store to exchange them if they didn't fit than it would be to mail things back. Now, I just go to the store, grab what I want, try them on, buy them and go home. Saves a lot of gas lol.

Part of the reason of why Macy's is crossdresser friendly is that they are in the middle of NYC. Employees dress up as clowns annually for the Thanksgiving Day parade, to be around the parade, but also to handle the balloons.
Being in the heart of the Big Apple, where I grew up, I can tell you that since I was a teenager at least (I'm 60) there have always been gay men working there. My dearly departed brother was one. My brother was gay, and knew a lot of the employees at Macy's who were crossdressers, and many who were gay as well. After a few years at Macy's he went to work at Bloomingdale's, and said that they were even more gay, and lesbian folks working there, and some crossdressers who dressed up for work.
Now, I have not been dressing up for a long time, but I have been wearing makeup. Something about lipstick on my lips does it for me. So I only have my brother's word to go by. However, I seem to remember that Macy's and Bloomingdale's were some of the first places in NYC where gay people got the same healthcare and other job benefits as straight people. This tells me that these stores are not just friendly to crossdressers, but they are more friendly to everyone, no matter how they dress, what their gender, sexuality or race is. I can see this today in these retail icons of NYC.
