One that may only be immediately obvious to the ladies in the UK…

I buy the “Guardian” newspaper every day; the Saturday magazine they include had a cover photo and main article about the lovely Munroe Bergdorf – I assume we all know about her?  On the page after they had profiled Munroe, they did an article about Andrew Tate… a self confessed (and unrepentant) sexist and misogynist, currently being held in Romania on charges including human trafficking and rape.  We all know that things are not what they were in the 1980’s or even the 1990’s; going back to those days, Munroe Bergdorf would not have been featured in any national newspaper.  It’s now 2023; Andrew Tate is – unfortunately – not exactly unique…  Have things really changed?  Are things actually getting better – or is it just that crossdressers and trans ladies get given a little more publicity while society carries on in the same old horrible way?  Not feeling too great about the world…  Holly XXX

Yes, things have changed a great deal, and for the better. The jerks like you mentioned have always been out there, but now there are mostly marginalized except among their core followers. 20, 30, 40 years ago their thinking would not have gotten a second look, but today the majority of people think they are just idiots, and if not a majority, at least a large percentage. People like that actually help the marginalized communities by pointing out how wrong that thinking is. Here in the US we have such idiots as Alex Jones, who spouts verbal diarrhea about a variety topics including gender issues. Such he has an entirely too large a following, but they are the fringe, not the mainstream. The more misogynists spout off they more obvious they just fringe a-holes

Never forget that the Nazi’s were on the fringe until they were not.  In these past six years I have relearned that Democracy cannot be taken for granted.  We have to be careful with these hateful elements.

If you came of age in the Deep South during the 70s, you KNOW things have changed.

Those attitudes kept me locked in the closet until retirement.

Compared to decades ago things have certainly changed but the political party of you know who is trying their damnest to turn back the clock to the 50’s with oppressive laws targeting alt lifestyles. Its a scary world not knowing if some rabid idiot might attack us out of the blue just for being us when everyone is already constantly looking to avoid the next mass shooter. Like in the old days there is still the threat of violence so be careful and safe out there girls. They may be a fringe subset but it only takes one to ruin your world.

      Hi Holly

In my opinion yes yes yes things have changed so much for the better.

Yes there are, and always will be Andrew Tates in this world. They are very much in the minority. Their sexist and mysogynistic views and actions are so controversial nowadays that they attract a lot of media attention because their views are so controversial nowadays.
One good thing about the Andrew Tate case I did see in the media. Many schools are using the case to discuss his views and actions with the pupils. Why they are wrong, demeaning to women, not funny.

I have two teenage children, and am privileged to work with many youngsters, and are mostly much more open, kind, empathetic and  respectful than those during my formative years in the last century. Being so interested in what they think about Bianca I have brought the issue into discussions in the staff room. They tell me there is a lot of emphasis in school on being taught to treat others with respect, regardless of appearance, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion, physical or mental disabilities, and to be open about their feelings. And here in my little part of Scotland anyway wonderful young open kind adults expressing themselves without hurting others, are in the vast majority. And they will certainly speak up against hatred, racism, homophobia, misogyny etc. My heart sings with optimism for the future when I am in their company.

I also have to agree with the majority that things have changed. I have seen gay or lesbian roles on TV. I have seen gay and lesbian people on game shows. I have seen openly trans people on game shows. I have seen women dress up in very masculine clothing (not women’s clothing that looks like men’s clothing) on game shows. I’ve heard of people who came out as transgender, whether it be famous people or local radio personalities.

Is it perfect? Of course not. There are still those who don’t believe people should be able to express themselves, or to transition. But there are also those who have problems with other races or nationalities. It could be a long time before acceptance is everywhere. Still, I have to say that change is happening.
