When I left the house that evening, dressed in a cotton knee length pleated baby blue skirt, a pink and baby blue cotton button up shirt that had elbow length sleeves, my short brown wig and white tennies with flowers printed on the canvas, I was feeling pretty.  I had my shirt tucked into my skirt so I could wear a white belt. I was also wearing a pair of white shear panty hose. It seemed like a normal Saturday night headed to a favorite poker room for some texas hold-em action. Boy was I wrong.

When I got to the casino I headed straight to the poker room and bought into a $5 – $10 no limit game. Walking towards the table with my rack of red chips I always give the table a quick scan to see the players who are already sitting and playing. When I looked at the number 1 seat, next to the dealer, I froze in my tracks. My mouth kind of dropped open in awe. Sitting there, shuffling a short stack of red chips in his hand, was a guy I knew very well. I thought he perished in Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

He was a good friend and I wanted run over, slap him on the back, and tell him I was dam glad to see him. But I remained where I stood, frozen. Some of the people already seated at the table knew I was a crossdresser but he had no clue. I took a couple breaths and headed to the table and joined the game. As luck would have it my seat was right next to him. I let several hands go by until the button landed on me. The cards were dealt I had broadway, Ace & King suited in hearts. I remained silent at the table until this hand. When the betting got around to me I said, “RAISE”, without trying to disguise my voice. My friend seated next to me immediately turned and looked at me. I felt my anxiety rise a few notches. I looked at him and gave him my best flirty wink. The game went on for a few more hours. He made a few friendly comments to me during the game but if he recognized me, he didn’t let on.

When I finally decided to call it quits, I grabbed a plastic rack to stack my chips in to go and cash out. I noticed that my friend also got ready to cash out. My anxiety started to kick in again. Out on the casino floor he spoke to me. He strolled up beside me and said, “Don’t I know you?”. I looked at him and swallowed hard.

      Long story short…….

We ended up sitting at Waffle House, drinking coffee and catching up on old times, till four in the morning. When he finally stood up and stated he had to get home to the wife I stood up also, slapped him on the back and said “good to see you again”. I watched him leave and I turned, grabbed my purse and headed home myself. My anxiety had turned into a grin.

Woooh Wendie, you crafted one exciting story! My pulse speed up reading it!! What timing and such a positive ending. Here’s a few lines that stood out for me:

I was a weird student in high school. I enjoyed English class and writing essays. (shaking my head, what a nerd) I like writing and sharing happy stories with my girlfriends.

What a wonderful story, Wendie! I can’t imagine the relief you must have felt at knowing your friend was still alive or the stress of how he might handle knowing you’re a cross dresser. What an odd juxtaposition to find yourself in. I’m very happy for you that he survived and that the two of you were able to talk without any problems. Thank you for sharing!

      Hugs, Jill

What a fun little story, Wendie! Y’all caught up on old times at the Waffle House, but your friend must’ve been just a little curious about your crossdressing. If so, nosy ol’ me would sure like to know what was said about the subject!

……… He strolled up beside me and said, “Don’t I know you?”. I looked at him and swallowed hard……

I replied, “Who do you think I am?”.
He said, “You very much remind me of a very close old friend, R***R W*********N.”
With a slight tremble in my voice, I said, “I am”
He stared at me for few minutes and then he spoke, “I love your outfit, very cute.”
Giving him my best flirty look, I said, “Cute and flirty is what I do best”
He said “I can see that”
We both smiled and we walked together to the elevator and into the parking garage to leave agreeing to meet up at the Waffle House.

      Wendie –

What a lovely experience for you.  First to find out your friend is still around and secondly to have been able to catch up with him.

I’m pretty sure I would have turned and left once I had spotted someone I knew. That took guts to own the situation as it were. Happy that you didn’t experience a poor reaction.

I’m also very happy to hear that your friend was still alive. That must have felt really good but odd at the same time since Katrina was some time ago. Juxtaposed with Covid it seems like forever ago.

Great story, girlfriend you have nerves of steel!

You’re a braver gal than I am, Sweetie.  I may have turned tail and walked out.  I’m so glad this story has a happy ending.

BTW – just curious. DID you talk about your dressing???

I guess it all comes down to how out of the closet you are about dressing. If you are fully out, Then just embrace the situation and enjoy the evening. I mostly in the closet then maybe play at another table. it sounds like a wonderful evening, and I am glad you embraced it and we’re able to catch up with an old friend and enjoy an evening out dressed.

Wendie, just goes to show you often our worst fears of being found hold us back from possibility of finding someone who will accept us as our fem self and still be a friend.

I think the fact that you went ahead and continued to sit at that table and play, means a LOT…so confident and fearless….as it should be…so happy and proud of you, Wendie….you “won” that night, in more ways than one, I hope…!!!
