I’ve been contemplating these last few years whether or not I should make a FB page for my alter ego. So I can keep photos on there and share with my friends. So as of last week. I made one.

It is Cherrie Llewellyn. If you want to connect and say hi.

Hi Cherrie!   I would reconsider Facebook. They are having too many issues within the USA and I read that they may be shut down before too long. I know what it is like to spend a lot of time and effort to make a page and then have it disappear. FB sends me a hell of a lot of other members…possible friends, eating up my data plan….they won’t stop or respond. Look forward to hearing more from you……if I can be of assistance, do let me know anytime. My door is always open!

      Hugs my sister!

        Hello Dame Veronica

What do you think is a good media site?

Would love to hear your opinion on what one I should do.

Rumors of Facebook’s demise have been circulating for at least two years now, including a fake video purportedly showing Mark Zuckerberg himself saying he was shutting it down. These are just rumors. I highly doubt they are going anywhere. They own three of the top five social media platforms in the U.S. (Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger). While they have had problems regulating content, every social media company has had the same problems. And with the recent shutdown of Google +, I’m hard pressed to think of another similar social media provider (with a similar platform) that has sufficient market penetration to seriously connect you with friends. Of course there are Twitter and Pinterest, but these are quite different platforms. I’d be curious to hear Dame Veronica’s suggestion for alternatives.

Agreed. Facebook currently has a market cap of $545 Billion, and revenue of $59 Billion with a 33% profit margin. They aren’t on the point of going out of business.

Creating an alt Facebook account is playing with fire if you are concerned about being outed. Don’t be too surprised if Cherrie appears in the feeds of your primary account friends as someone they might know, especially if you carry a pocket tracking device (aka smart phone). We live in interesting times as far as privacy is concerned.

And we Brits want to let Huawei get involved with building our 5G network.

Not much I agree with Donald J about but on this he is right, it cannot happen. To much snooping for me.

It’s not the snooping you need to worry about with Huawei, all the existing (mostly American) routing kit is riddled with back doors, most of which the FBI and CIA (and thus MI5, etc) all know about.

It’s the shoddy coding, which could allow hackers to craft their own back doors…

Mind you, the hackers we need to be concerned about are those who purchase software from a particular Israeli company (no racism intended, the company are Israeli and that is a fact) – or companies who specialise in similar products whose purpose is “security”.

Mine’s the coat with “nerd” on the back…

Cheers Laura for the knowledge and replying. I suppose we all know our governments have the ability to monitor us and how Facebook and it’s ilk can target sections of the public and try to influence them, Cambridge Analytical and Brexit come to mind.

I was anti Brexit and love meeting and talking to people from  all over the world. But I do feel that certain things should be in house and the two that instantly come to mind are Nuclear plants and 5G. If for nothing more than appearances these should stay domestic and probably state run. There’s my two penneth. So your a nerd and my jacket has leftie on it 😉

            Enjoy your day.

The Huawei issue in America is more about lack of competitiveness than spying. Huawei was ahead of the game and the US government got involved and stopped them to protect US companies. Remember, the US government was caught red handed spying on other world leaders via their smart phones. Angela Merkel was one of them.

you wouldn’t find out much spying on our lot in the UK, it would be hard to find a more incompetent bunch. Spying for comedy value only.

I have been wanting to do the same.  But things are so interconnected now it is difficult to do so.  You’d really need a completely separate tablet of laptop, etc., that was exclusive to your alternate identity.

I could not use the same computer for “Rebekka” and my other self.  It is risky enough logging into CDH and FB with myself, takes a lot of maintenance and remembering to clear out what you can.

Same goes for your smart phone.

Be very careful with this.   It has been proven lately as well that some smart devices (or the apps running on them), “listen in”, to normal conversations allegedly designed to present you with things you “like”, and happen to mention in casual conversation.  I’ve heard a number of people comment, “I was talking about a product with a friend, and later that day an add for that product popped up in my FB feed.

Don’t mean to be over  anxious about this stuff, but it is real.

      Caveat Emptor!  (check spelling)

      Hi girls,

Time to add a bit of levity to this topic

      A SENIORS VERSION OF FACEBOOK

For those of my generation who do not and cannot comprehend Facebook, I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook, when applying the same principles.

Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passersby what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I did the night before and what I will do later and with whom.

I give them pictures of my family, my dog and me in the garden, taking things apart in the garage, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch and doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I listen to their conversations, give them a “thumbs up” and tell them I “like” them

And it works just like Facebook!! I already have four people following me, two cops, a private detective and a psychiatrist!!!

This little lot is  a priceless collection of “smile” emoji’s and “thumbs ups”

      Caty.

Oh please forgive me….. A Mortal Sin!! I forgot “LOL” or maybe even LMAO!!

People are hard-wired to spot patterns or, as we call them, ‘coincidences’. I suspect 90% of such cases are just that. Or the fact that they are talking about said ‘product’ was because they’d clicked on a link featuring it earlier, or even mentioned it in passing on a social media platform.

Truly don’t believe that is the case.

Another smart TV manufacturer (along with Amazon) admitted that they have the capability to
“listen in” to peoples conversations, through their smart TV’s.  Case and point, “Alexa”

It depends how you use it. I use Facebook groups to organise a number of my hobby activities with people, both locally and further afield. Groups are quite big and active, but many are ‘Closed’ so only members see the activity. Probably over half of my Facebook traffic now is group activity that many of my friends never see 🙂

I had a Facebook account and was enjoying having a place I could post via Ciao. One day, as I was scrolling through the recommended friends I noticed that some of the recommendations were friends from my normal FB account. Actually, too many to brush off. Somehow, FB made a connection between my two accounts even though I was diligent about being anonymous. I deleted the Ciao account immediately and have not been back.
