User thumbnail pictures missing

In the evening on 4/5/16, I noticed that the round picture thumbnails of users logged in no longer appear on the right side of the page after you log in. Is this a bug or a feature?

I, and others, are really missing this feature. Will it be coming back or is it in the too hard basket?

It has been removed according to the powers that be.
