I chose a name I liked and is dissimilar from my legal name. A few things were important considerations:
- I don’t like any part of my legal name. I wanted a fresh start.
- Keeping my legal identity and CD identity completely separate to reduce the chance of being outed to family, friends, and work. Select individuals and organizations know (or will know) about me, but it’s on my terms.
- I wanted a name I’d be comfortable using legally if I ever transitioned.
- If I transition, I want to respect the conservative sensibilities of my relatives. Having a completely different name is one way to minimize the fallout.
