Pretty sure it’s something Groucho said, but I don’t know the movie. So, instead, I’ll throw out another Groucho line (don’t know which movie this one’s from, either):

“This is like living in Pittsburgh – if you can call that living”.

Groucho was right on the money.  The movie is “Animal Crackers”

For the life of me, I thought I’d posted this one already, but I scanned all the way down to August and didn’t see it posted anywhere. Anyway, here it is:

Rose: “Do you love him, Loretta?”
Loretta: “Ma, I love him awful.”
Rose: “Oh, God, that’s too bad.”

And from the same movie, a dead giveaway: “Snap out of it!”

Not too obvious at all Marti, right on the dot.  It took a rerun of “The Scarlett Pumpernickel ” with Daffy Duck to get my memory to think of it.

I have not read through all the replies but I would be shocked if I was the first one to post this.

It’s from Dustin Hoffman in the movie Tootsie

“I’m a better man as a woman with a woman than I could ever be as a man with a woman”

I believe that is so true and it would be so wonderful if women would only give gurls like us a chance

You are correct my dear. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie but I believe the title was “My Darling Chickadee”. I seem to remember from one of those hosts who shows these oldies that this was the only movie that the two of them were ever in together.

It sounds like Robin Williams. Possibly, “The Fisher King”? I saw it last month and think I recall the line. Sounds like something the director would have written as well.

Okay Wilma, I admit, I had to cheat on this one, but I know I’ve heard this line before in a movie and it was killing me that I couldn’t remember where. So I asked my brother, the best person I know at identifying lines from movies (except for PaulaF, of course!).

So he said that “You’ve got me! but whose got you?” is from the original Superman movie with Christopher Reeves. Is he right?

The movie was “The Magnificent 7”  When Eli Wallach and his men road up to the gates of the village and the 7 gun fighters were there to meet them.  He says to Yul Brynner.  “Generosity….that was my first mistake.  I leave these peasants a few extra ears of corn and they use the money to make trouble for me.  It’s like I always say, sooner or later you pay for every good dead.”

The quote may not be exact but I believe it is close.

        Hugs,

        Michelle

Here’s a good one.  Makes me laugh every time.

A man is at a counter with a dog in front of the counter asleep.

      Question: Does your dog bite?

      Answer: No.

(Reaches down to pet the dog and the dog bites him) I thought you said your dog didn’t bite!

      That is not my dog.

It’s really getting a lot harder to draw from movies I’ve seen and enjoyed. But, here’s another one I just remembered, and don’t think has been quoted yet:

Jessica : No. I mean I cant have dinner with you because I’m with Helen.

Josh : Oh, you’re having dinner with Helen?

Jessica : No. I mean I’m “with” Helen.

Josh : Like “with” with Helen?

      Jessica : Right, “with” with.

Big, big hint: one of these names is in the title of the movie.

This one goes back to June 29th and no one seems to have identified the movie, so I’ll go ahead and do so. The movie is “Kissing Jessica Stein”, and I can’t resist giving it a shout-out here. It’s a quirky, lesbian (sort of) movie but beautifully done and worth the watch. I you’re averse to chick flicks, this is not the movie for you.

Okay, I don’t remember the name of the movie, and I don’t remember the name “Steve”. BUT, all the other words in this line were spoken in a movie by the lovely young Lauren Bacall to Humprey Bogart. I can visualize the scene in my head, but I don’t remember the name “Steve”.

I hope one of the other girls can come up with the movie title.

          Hi Camryn,

          – it doesn’t look like there’s any takers, so to put you out of your misery, it was called “To have and have not”. Incredibly, Bacall was only 18 at the time. That was the start of her and Bogart’s relationship. When Bogart died, she placed a whistle in his coffin. Sweet touch.

I can’t identify your movie quote, Wilma, but it reminded me of a similar line in the movie “The Three Amigos”. The bandido says something like: “I like these guys! They are funny guys, just kill one of them.”

That’s the only line I remember; the movie itself was too corny for my taste.

What?! Two days and no new movie quotes? I’m running out of movies to quote from (that I’ve seen), but I still have one or two quotes left up my sleeve! Here’s today’s:

“You want a toe? I can getcha a toe. Believe me, there are ways, Dude,
you don’t want to know about it, believe me. Hell, I can get you a toe
by three o’clock this afternoon, with nailpolish.”

Grosse Pointe Blank. John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Dan Akroyd, Joan Cusack in a geographically awkward in only the way someone who’s been there would realize movie you may have to watch more than once to appreciate.

“Markie, Ricky, Danny, Terry, Mikey, Davey, Timmy, Tommy, Joey, Robby,
      Johnny and Brian.”

I don’t know why I’m so fond of this line from the movie. Matt Damon’s character played a genius, and I’ve always been fascinated by how the mind of geniuses works. One more hint: Minnie Driver also played a major role.

From another old movie (starring a very young Richard Dreyfuss):

      “Play the five tones”

For those familiar with this musical stuff (I’m not) here’s a hint from the internet: The five tones are, in solfège, Re, Mi, Do, Do, So. The second Do is an octave below the first. I have no idea what that means.

And, no, it’s NOT from “The Sound of Music”!!!

That one kind of sticks in my memory Carmyn.  I was introduced to a nice looking young man back then, even almost a hottie .  But on the dance floor he became super geek and even incorporated the hand signs from the movie into his moves, which weren’t many, and were sort of Elainish from Seinfeld.

That movie probably did more for nerd birth control than Clark Kent’s glasses.

Not having much luck with what I thought were not so obscure lines from cult movies. Still, never say never. Trying again.

Dr Harry Wolper Love Formula. Add up the number of times that you think about the lady each day. Subtract from the total the number of times you think about yourself each day. If the remainder is more lady, and less yourself, then it’s love.

Boris Oh, I’ve been thinking about Barbara a lot lately.

Dr Harry Wolper What’s so very neat about this particular formula, is that “a lot” plugs into it beautifully. Boris, would you and the subject of your computations care to join me at the beach house for the weekend?

Sort of seems Shakespearean but I do not recall anything in Shakespeare that is reminiscent. Also sounds sort of puritanical, so I thought maybe, “Cromwell”. At a guess, maybe, “A Man For All Seasons”?

I haven’t read that for years. Actually my favourite is, “A Fish Dinner in Memison”. The ending to, “Mistress of Mistresses”, (not quite what you might think) was a bit depressing. Personally I think they would make great movies, provided someone is prepared to lose a lot of money.

I think that I always felt that LOTR would be a movie someday. Apart from Bakshi’s effort. In general, I was pleased with the results with some quibbles in casting although generally choices were brilliant. I can understand why some parts were left out such as the Old Forest – Tom Bombadil portion but that meant the Barrow Downs sequence also had to be removed. That was a key to Strider’s history and ancestry. I did regret the removal of the Scouring of the Shire which provided an extended denouement.

On the other hand, there was an attempt to hint to persons knowledgeable of the whole ‘mythos’ bits and pieces. When the Rohirrim retreat to the Caves of Aglarond, you can see hints of the glimmering, sparkling features that Gimli later waxes eloquent upon. The expansion of Arwen Undomiel’s role, combining several characters, was brilliant.

This is really hard. My first thought was, “Alexander Nevsky”, but the antagonists were Teutonic Knights. There was a Polish Empire so it might be something a Cossack would say. This made me think of, “The Brothers Karamazov”, (the one with Captain Kirk), but I suspect this was set in the wrong period but I can’t think of anything else.

Me again, with another easy one (don’t ya’ll just love the easy ones?)! It’s not exactly a “quote”, but a line in a song from the movie:

“You can own the Earth and still, all you’ll own is earth until,
you can paint with all the colors of the wind”.

Well, this one goes back to June 23rd. And I thought this one would really be easy. I KNOW I’m not the only Disney fan on this Forum Topic, but this one is soooo old, maybe that’s the reason no one got it.

The line is from a song in the Disney classic “Pocahontas”. The song is “Colors of the Wind”.

Okay, it’s time for an easy one! In fact, this one is so commonly quoted I don’t give it a day before it’s recognized. I don’t remember anyone ever mentioning this one, but if someone has, sorry for the repeat.

“If you build it, he will come.”

OBTW, I didn’t really care for the movie but I couldn’t forget the line.

It didn’t take a minute.  But that is the tag line for the whole movie, you just don’t know who “he” is.  And I like most of what Costner does.  The latest, Let Him Go, was different for sure, not the worst though.  Dances With Wolves and Open Range are probably the best, IMO.

Me, too, Paula. Kevin Costner has made so many, and of those I’ve seen, I liked. Never saw Open Range, but thought Dances with Wolves was good. But here are a few of my favorites even though they went by unnoticed or did not get much critical acclaim: The Bodyguard, The Untouchables (Sean Connery also great in that one), and a crazy favorite of mine, The Upside of Anger.

Although I liked his role in Hidden Figures, the “computer ladies” really stole the show. (I’m crazy about really smart and/or powerful women).

The film of his I have had the hardest time finding, and I cannot ever remember it’s name, he is a U.S. Naval officer but twists around a bit a we find out he is an agent for another country.  I have only caught part of it two times, so I may have the plot screwed up, lol.

For watching Open Range, just before the gun fight, turn your volume up a bit more than usual, sit back in your chair and hold on tight, it is intense.  And don’t chicken out on the volume, your pulse will br pounding and your senses almost full loaded when it is over.  Almost as intense as Michael Caine in the old Zulu battle.

Well, I finally rented “Open Range”, Paula. Saw it two nights ago. Wow, you were right, great movie. I don’t know how I missed it. And that gun fight scene was top notch! Made the gunfight at the OK corral look like a cafeteria food fight!

But, of course, being a sucker for happy endings, I couldn’t help but get all misty when Kevin Costner’s character proposed to Annette Benning (one of my favorite stars). Or when she gave him her locket for good luck before the final showdown.

Just thought you’d like to know.

Open Range is one of the best westerns in a long time.  I think Costner and Benning have a good chemistry in this one and Duvalls character is one of his best too.

I checked his filmography and the movie I think you might be referring to is “No Way Out”, 1987. I remember watching it way back then when I had HBO, but don’t remember much about it except the surprise ending…. and something called the “eigenvalues” (crazy the little details we sometimes remember). Not used to Kevin Costner being the “bad guy”.

I put Open Range on my Netflix queue. We’ll see if I can withstand the gunfight scene!! Thanks, Paula.

OK. 80’s comedy classic… by the script. Think western spoof.

“Have you ever kissed a girl, Dusty”?

“Oh, sure. Yeah. LOTS of times”.

“Do you want to kiss ME”?

      “Uhm, yeah”!

      “Well”?

      “What… Here? Now”?

“We could go for a walk, and you could kiss me on the veranda”!

“On the LIPS would be fine”!

      From a 1982 movie:

      Mother: Do you see them?
      Daughter: Uh-uh. Do you?
      Mother: Uh-uh.

I think I am showing my age on some of these, or that I used to watch a LOT of movies, still do sometimes.

I show my age in all the movie quotes I’ve submitted so far. Notice I offer no quotes from recent movies (LT 10 yrs old). That’s because I’ve never seen them!!

And, yep, only Jack Nicholson could make such a seemingly simple line so memorable.

This may be a tough, but the movie will “kill” you:

“Yes, operator?  I’d like the Happy Dale Sanatorium, Happy Dale New York.  Come on operator, what’s taking so long?  They’re just across the river.  I could swim it faster!  No, I don’t want Happy Dale Laundry, I want the Happy Dale Sanitorium.  Sanitorium, sanitorium, sanitorium.   Yes, yes, like a broken record.  What?  They’re busy?  No madam, I am NOT drunk, but you’ve just given me an idea.”  (throws down the phone)

Actually, it may be easier for me as I have been a cinema aficionado from childhood and have a fair-sized collection. Most of these movies I have seen within the past year. “Mystery Men”, I may have seen 8-10 times.

I have boxes of VHS tapes and DVD’s of classic and ‘B’ movies that I have gathered over the years.  Starting about 2010, I backed off of movies for a while, so now there is a gap for me to catch up with.  But I do love the obscure and off beat classics.

This one is dialog from the last scene of one of my favorite chick flicks (and there are many). Hint: the scene takes place at the top of the Empire State Bldg in NYC.

      MAN: “It’s you.”

      WOMAN: “It’s me.”

      MAN: “I saw you… in… the street.”

      BOY: “You Annie?”

      WOMAN: “Yes.”

      MAN: “You’re Annie???”

It’s getting tougher to post something that hasn’t already been posted.

But I don’t think this one has:

“….she should be here. Come on, man, it’s just weird, two guys hanging out, one turning into a girl…”

This one goes back to May 12, so I thought I’d just provide the movie title.

      Zerophilia.

Sorta strange movie about a DNA quirk that allows some people to morph from man to woman, then back again at will

That sort of sounds like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, but I am not sure. I think the punch-line there was something like, “Are you sure you used enough dynamite?” The ‘bloody’ sounds like Michael Caine in, “The Italian Job”, the good version.

I do have the original. I’ll have to watch it again. I did see the remake but, although slick in points, it didn’t have the same appeal. I have seen few remakes (if any) that match the original. An exception might be, “Yojimbo”. I have seen at least five versions, a couple quite good. One that got panned heavily is, “The Blue Iguana”, but, apart from some acting quibbles, I enjoyed it and was impressed with much of the cast.

Okay, okay, maybe not that easy. Here’s more quotes from the same movie:

          — “You know how much a candy bar costs?”
          — “About a hundred dollars”
          — “You know how much one of those new compact cars cost?”
          — “About a hundred dollars”

          — “We’re counting cards”

Me again, with another easy one (don’t ya’ll just love the easy ones?)! It’s not exactly a “quote”, but a line in a song from the movie:

“You can own the Earth and still, all you’ll own is earth until,
you can paint with all the colors of the wind”.

I’ve always been a fan of WWII movies, Annaleigh, so this one’s for you.
It’s really raw, but it’s in the movie.

Okay, here’s another one. Should be easy for all you Arnie fans.

“Crom… I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it.
No one, not even you will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we
fought or why we died. No. All that matters is that two stood against
many. That’s what’s important. Valor pleases you, Crom, so grant me one
request: grant me revenge. And if you do not listen… then to hell
      with you!”

Hint: Imagine this “prayer” to Crom spoken in a deep-voiced Austrian accent!!

One other thing about the movie I’d like to mention. The original score written by the great
Basil Poledouris still gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it, even to this day.

Two days, and no movie quotes posted. Can’t let that happen!!

      So, try this one:

“Grace has Bob’s dead wife’s heart!”

From a highly underrated movie, so here’s a few hints:

      Grace played by Minnie Driver.

      Bob played by David Duchovny.

And a male gorilla named Sidney who detects Elizabeth’s heart in Grace!
