I was in 1950 in Belfast. In those days Northern Ireland it was very conservative. Crossdressing happened but done in secret and very frowned upon. Working class people especially women weren’t afraid in speaking their mind.
Things are slowly beginning to change younger ones are generally more accepting, even some older women seem to be softening but it’s still there.
Often heard it said of people like us, he sits down to pee and he’s a real Ginny Anne. Did any of you girls ever come across that?

Don’t know if it’s all of Ireland, it might only apply to Northern Ireland.

I think it’s the equivalent of being a ‘sissy boy’ here. In itself It just denotes that you are effeminate. There’s a lot worse names than that..

I first heard the term when someone else on the site use it and I looked it up. It is not really used in the U.S.
When my brother was getting cancer treatment, he would sometimes tell the doctor that he went but had to sit, and would whisper (like a girl). I always found it a bit odd. After all, if I go in the middle of the night I will sit so I don’t have to turn on the light, and if I’m doing more than “number 1”, I’ll sit the whole time.

Have you considered shaving that mustache? You might draw less attention over how you pee. 😉

Interesting topic. Like Allison I sit when I get up in the middle of the night. I’ve started sitting all the time at home and am going to start when out. Part of the reason for that is that I need to wear a pad all the time and it is hard to deal with when standing (sorry if that’s TMI). Honestly I don’t think anyone would pay it much attention one way or the other.
XOXO

I sit most of the time. Whether it makes me a sissy boy or not. I really don’t care what others think. I am going to be me.

Thanks for the lesson Liz, My wife is Irish and didn’t know that phrase. Regardless of naming, I sit. I’m plumbed a little different and am set for 45 degrees to the right. Standing doesn’t work as well and sitting solves the problem. It’s an easy work around and avoids a surgery. May the force be with you, Marg

Marg, it’s more of an Ulster phrase rather than Irish.
Certainly used in working class areas of BelfastLiz
