One of the first steps taken last year in my quest to truly liberate my femme self was removing all my facial hair growth including a rather prominent mustache that I had been clinging to for almost thirty years.  Having never seen me with a smooth face, my wife Jennifer was just thrilled with the change as was I…with one exception.  My inherited and rather full with age and downright bushy eyebrows were now standing out front and center on my visage.  Ugh!

I just hated the look of these “face caterpillars” and desperately wanted a solution.  But at that time we were thick into the flurry of activity around buying our retirement home and fixing up and selling our old house and property so that solution would have to wait until after our big out of state move.  Once we were settled into our new abode, my wife suggested that I have my brows done right and directed me to a large beauty outlet nearby that featured both an in-store salon and a “brow bar.”

I was both excited and nervous about the prospect of my first visit to such a female eccentric place.  But I reasoned that for many years I had been going to a mostly female oriented salon for haircuts (and enjoyed every minute of it!) so why not?  I made my appointment online and the guidance there suggested a 30 minute session for first timers.  When the day came last month to go, I carefully pondered my dressing options and decided on a soft guy look of casual khaki pants and a nice pastel button up shirt but for sure I had one of my favorite VS thongs on underneath. I asked Jen if she wouldn’t mind tagging along which she happily agreed to as she wanted to pick up a few items there for herself.

Once we entered the store and located the brow bar, I was a little shaken by the fact that it was located in a mostly open space fairly close to the front and alongside and in nearly full view of those coming up the main entry aisle and also from the aisle on the other side that led back to the checkout area.  Yikes, nerves again!  But my moral support partner took me by my hand and guided me right up to the awaiting esthetician.

I told Erica that she was free to do whatever she thought would look best on me and to please don’t hold back.  With wife looking on she got right to work waxing, tweezing and trimming me for all she was worth.  She mentioned to us that while the number of men coming to the brow bar has been on the rise in recent years she still observes that so many more could really use her services and that included her boyfriend!  Ahhh, that helped me feel that I was in the right place after all. Out of the corner of my eye I could see more than a few ladies checking out who was in the chair and doing a slight double take with what they saw.  No matter, I was having the time of my life being pampered just like one of the girls.

Once Erica finished up I was given a hand mirror to view the results and oh my what joy overcame me!  She did a near perfect job taming my unruly brows and the results took about 20 years off my looks.  At that very moment I could see Jen’s approving looks and from behind her there were at least three ladies who had stopped dead in the aisle to take in the action that was my positive reaction, which I expressed a little loudly and without hesitation.  Now that was a genuine Kayla moment and I was so happy to have been able to freely express that in public.  I mean I almost squealed with delight!  What a breakthrough this experience has been in my long overdue journey to connect with my inner fem.

And my eyebrow high continued as my wife then guided me in picking out some accessories including a couple of brow pencils, a brow brush and some brow setting gel which I took up to the cashier and bought myself along with paying for Erica’s services.  I also made sure to sign up for their reward program and opened an account as I will be coming back both online and to the store for more goodies as I now begin my journey into the twin worlds of makeup and hair.

Since then I’ve been perfecting my daily eyebrow grooming techniques which I’m happy to report are getting better by the day.  I now have a decidedly female slant to my brows which I’m loving and Jen says they are starting to almost look better than hers.  And so far I’ve had no one take notice or comment on them looking feminine but if anyone does I think I’ll just tell them, “yes they do.”  And I can’t wait for my next brow appointment!

I want to say thank you so much to Jennifer for being such a loving and supporting partner.  It was beneficial and fun for me to write this post about such a little but so significant event.  Hope you enjoyed it and please feel free to share your own eyebrow experiences. 🙂

      Hugs,

      Kayla

      Hi Kayla,

Sounds like a fun experience. I liked your comparison to a trip to the salon for a haircut which no one thinks twice about anymore. I don’t have much in the eyebrow department, even less now after a case of shingles tried to take one out not that long ago.

      Dear Kayla ,

Thank you for your wonderful story !

I think it is great to have such a understanding Wife
      that supports your Femme side.
      I have brushy eyebrows myself , and I when I have a haircut ,
I let the hairdresser trim them down also , so they look more acceptable.

      Love Sylvia.

Thanks Sylvia.  If you can manage it I highly recommend you try out going to a brow specialist for a real treat.  Your face will never look the same!

This is amazing…. I don’t have too bushy eyebrows, but would love to have what I have made to look less manyly….
Next step…… Go and get your ears pierced! I had mine done a few months ago…. Seriously wonderful, but expensive. I can’t stop buying earrings!

You’re reading my mind Cerys!  I encouraged my wife to pierce her ears and wear earrings shortly after we first met and seeing her in them has only made me want my own for all these years.  I know this will become reality for me but it may have to come down the road a bit.  I’m trying not to overwhelm my wife as there’s already been so much change with me in such a short amount of time.  Until then I guess I’ll make do with my clip-ons!

The first 6 to 8 weeks are a pain as you have to keep the studs in all the time and clean them daily. It’s a little longer before you can wear heavy danglies, but it’s serriously worth the time. It sounds like your wife is more than on board, and willing to allow you to make changes. Discuss it as an idea first to test the water…. My wife suggested I get mine done. We talked about it a few weeks previous, but she didn’t seem that keen, then one Saturday morning, she said “Let’s go into town and get your ears pierced”. As I said, it’s a faff at first, but soooooooo worth it!

          Cerys.

Your wife must have an impulsive streak like mine does when it comes to decisions.  When I first brought up the ear piercing idea for her she was totally against it.  I kept hinting about it for a few months then even playfully hounded her a little bit for a few more months before forgetting about it as I felt it was a lost cause.  Then about a year in we were on a short weekend getaway and walking about a small shopping center just before dinner when she spotted a salon that did piercing and was still open.  She quickly turned to me and said “let’s do my ears!” and into the shop we went and I finally got what I wanted!  And she has totally been onboard with earrings ever since, especially all the ones I’ve bought her.  At one point in the past it was actually her idea that I get one ear pierced but I never liked that idea.  I will bring the concept of two ears up with her and let that percolate for a while.  Then I bet if I take her walking past enough ear piercing establishments maybe lighting will strike twice!  🙂

So nice to meet you too Stephanie! It’s beyond great for us to have these marvelous wives.  I’ve got a mutual grooming arrangement with mine, I help color her hair and she gives me my brazilians!  A nail salon treatment sounds divine, I hope to manage one of those down the road.  Just don’t want to overwhelm my SO as there’s already been so much change with me in such a short amount of time.  Until then, I’ve already started to grow out and file my nails.

The battle with the caterpillars is ongoing. So glad you had a fantastic experience. Mine are blonde/grey so not as noticeable but age has caused them to get excessively bushy. (Why does hair grow more on eyebrows, ears and nose but loses on top. ARGH!) When I got fitted for my wig the stylist shaved my remaining fringe and trimmed my brows. It looked great. Now it is time do get the bushy buggers trimmed again. I’m not good at it myself so a professional must be called.

      Hi Kayla

Welcome to CDH and thank you for your uplifting story. I would get my brows done, but worry how people would react once I am forced back into my male life. I wear my hair tight and always et the barber to trim my brows too. I live in a place where everybody knows somebody and very other building here seems to be a barbers, so a trip to the salon or nail bar is not possible

      Love
      Michelle

Hi and thanks Michelle. Since that appointment I’ve tweezed my brows a little bit thinner and I fill and finish the shaping with eyebrow pencil everyday.  So far not one person has said anything or given me any notice in guy mode so I say go for it!
