      Hi girls

I’m having a little dilemma with the spelling of my name. I took the name AnnaBeth from a TV character but sometimes people split the name into two names so should I spell it Annabeth instead?

What I really want to know is. Does anyone have an interesting story on how they picked their name?

It is what you are happy with at the end of the day. Names are always difficult and I am sure that many women, and men, would want a different name. When I was mulling over my name I recalled a conversation with my mother where it was asked what my name had been if I were born a girl. That is my name and solved the problem as whether I like it or not my parents chose it.

That’s a great idea but my Dad is gone and my mom has a poor memory so I don’t have any idea what my girl name would have been.

Robin is the name of a girl I went to middle school with.  She had quite the flair for makeup.  I particularly loved her eyelashes.  They were super long, thick and quite feminine.   They were always generously coated with lots of mascara.   I loved her eyelashes so much that one day after school I got into mom’s makeup.  In a few minutes I had lashes just like Robin’s.

Hello Annabeth, I know what you mean about your name I sometimes have the same problem. Being Helenmarie people sometimes just shorten it to Helen, which I do not mind when they are speaking to me but when it is written down it should be spelt correctly.

      love Helenmarie

I took the name Giselle from a lady my wife worked with.

She was a pretty French Canadien girl and I would have

loved to be her(my wife is also an attractive woman).

The first time I met her she was breastfeeding her newborn

baby and I so wished I had real breasts like her.

My name isn’t interesting at all and is very common. Its the female of my male name which is Michael. The last name of McQueen just seemed to fit nicely with the first. I’m known as Michelle here but on another site I have a different more feminine name. Its cool we can change our names easily and I’ve used several over the years.

      • #730613

It has a very feminine ring to it I think. “Michelleeeeeee”. I love it.

      Hi girls,

I know the most of you here on CDH use a feminine name that you’ve chosen and display with an avatar or photo on your page.   My name really is Lauren and my mother gave me that name when I was born, I know now that she always knew about my feminine side. I was literally born that way and irregardless of the debate and what gender critical people say, there’s ample scientific and medical proof that transgender women have female brains. But growing up and being expected to behave like a boy while having a girl’s name caused me to receive a lot of teasing and bullying in school.  I always knew I was supposed to be a girl and never did a very good job at acting like a boy.  So Lauren is my legal given name, and it is perfect for my life now as a trans woman. My middle name is Paul, and I want to change that. I don’t mind the name, it was the name of one of my mom’s brothers, but I’d like to feminize it.

I looked online, found quite a selection of feminine versions of the name Paul, but I would like to hear from my sisters here on CDH as to what they think is the prettiest female version of my middle name.

      Hugs, lots of big hugs,

      Ms. Lauren M

I think that’s so predestined that your real name is Lauren. As for the best fem form of Paul I would vote for Pauline. “Lauren Pauline Mugnaia” kinda has a ring to it.

I belonged to a book club that we titled the porn star book club, your porn name was the name of your first pet and your last name was the first street you lived on. Mine was Candy Remington, I thought of using that but didn’t really care for Candy so I picked Sherri, I’ve always liked the sound of Sherri.

I had used Dianne for years but wanted to change it. I had trouble finding one that I liked until I was watching a British show on TV & saw an actress I thought was very attractive. In the credits after the show I saw her name, Fiona, and immediately fell in love with it. In trying to decide on a last name, my mostly black cat walked by so I chose Black.

Of the few Fionas who come to mind, I will never forget Fiona Richmond, a British porn star from decades ago, who worked for Club magazine. She was attractive, slim, sort of raunchy, in the Xaviera Hollander mould. I was too young in those days to really appreciate either of them.

Fiona is a beautiful Scottish / Gaelic name created in the 19th century by the author William Sharp.

During my internship I met this wonderful lady. Her name is Alicia and she was an assistant. I loved how nice and smart she was. Also how feminine and elegant she always looked. She always wore skirts and had beautiful legs. That’s why I chose her name.

    • #719639

I chose my name as a pun to remind me that I am still male. My male name can be shortened to Al, so I chose the name “Al-is-son”, a reminder that I am still a son, not a daughter.

Then the question came up as to the spelling. While I would have liked the direct Alisson, that form is very rare, and when used, is more often a surname than a first name. The more common spelling, Allison, reads more like All is son, not the message I want to get across. So I chose Alison, with the “s” serving a dual purpose of “is” and “son”

    • #719642

I chose Madeline because I don’t know anyone named Madeline. I want to be unique and not like someone else I know. I didn’t want the memory of someone influencing my new feminine personality. I just want to be me.

      Nika

Mine also has a little story, I started out with Deedee as it is a play on my real name and sounded really cute but my wife is also a De and we have a business together called Deedee’s and she did take too kindly to me calling my feminine side Deedee so I had to find something else.

Then I remembered a name I came up with years ago Tanika (play on Juanita a manga character that was really cute) but Tanika did not resonate with me until I saw the nickname Nika and it suddenly hit me, I really liked it and Nika was born 😊

    • #719783

My real name is unisex and I find it more natural to use it in real life, regardless of my gender expression. Nikki is really most useful as shorthand for en femme me: “this top would look great on Nikki” that kind of thing. If we meet new people while out, my wife will introduce me as her friend Nikki, but that’s pretty rare. It feels better when people meet me as Nikki, but from people who’ve known me for a long time it sounds stilted. It’s hard to say where it came from, as it really just popped into my head and resonated.

I always liked Katie, based on someone I knew when I was younger. But my second name was picked in haste after watching an advert for the new season of Carnival Row and, as such, is a derivation of the actress/actor Cara Delevingne.

However, the more I look at it, the more I think it looks like some kind of toothpaste brand 😊

      Baroness - Annual

About 20 years or so ago I saw 2 Journalists on television with the name Lara. I thought it was a pretty name, and a little unusual. I didn’t have the feelings to dress up as a woman at that time, but I do remember thinking that if I were a woman I would love to have that name.
As soon as I  began cross dressing I took the name for my feminine self.

I have not seen that movie since I was really young. I was 5 when that movie came out. It was one of my mom’s favorites! The memory that one of the characters was named Lara was long forgotten, or perhaps just laying deeper in the subconscious, waiting for the opportunity to surface! 🤯

Or maybe I just heard it 20 years ago, all over again, and fell in love with the name.
Wow! You are not kidding about Julie Christie’s heart stopping beauty!

My first name was chosen by my wife, which I never would’ve chosen for myself.  It’s actually based on the character Josette from the Dark Shadows soap opera, which is a show we became obsessed with.  Whenever I was out, I just introduced myself as Josie with no last name, as I had no idea what to choose.  My hand was forced when I registered to join this site and was asked for a last name, which became “Dwee”.  Why that?  Well, a few years ago, before I became Josie, I decided to try to become an artist, but I wanted to use an alias rather than my real name, which I never really liked.  I took the artist name “Ojrd Dwee”.  The name is a play on the French word “aujourd’hui”, which means “today” in English.  The reason why I chose it was so I could use it as an anti-procrastination device.  In other words, in order to get my ass in gear to be productive I would ask myself when would I be able to earn the name “Ojrd Dwee”.  Today.  And that would inspire me to do something.  In any case, right now I just go by the name of “Josie Dwee” just because it’s easier but perhaps I might combine both names to be “Josie Ojrd Dwee” in the future.

Thinking of the old Dark Shadows series, I recall a character named “Angelique” I don’t think she played a very nice person but I wished I would have thought of it before. It might have been the perfect name for the ShadowQueen.

I had to ponder it when opening up nearly 6 years ago. After really putting some thoughts into it I realized a few times that one name seemed to have come up through my life. Starting back when I was just a teen in the seventies. Having long hair my mother only requirements was keeping it clean and never in my eyes,  she would constantly calling my Stephanie saying if you were a daughter thats what I would have called you. Secondly it’s a throw in of my male name and thirdly it’s my wife’s middle name so between them all it was my obvious choice. When opening up to my wife actually set it in motion when opening up to her she just said ” I  guess I’ll just call you Stephanie ” go figure  🌷

    • #729696

I have started a few times that I kind of picked my name at random. I wanted the superhero style of alliteration and landed on J and just kind of went with it. Actually been debating about going back and fine a rebrand with a different name for awhile.

    • #730155

I have an “aunt”, my mother’s cousin, whose mother’s name was Mary and father’s name was Don. Their names were combined to christen her name: MaryDonna, and that is how she spells it; not split.

My femme name has different spellings; Britney or Brittany. I’ve always liked the name, but I didn’t want to take the name of a once famous teen pop singer and the “Britta” in the second reminds me of the Brita water filter pitcher commercials. I wanted mine to be different and special, so I spell mine as Brittney.

That’s what I think is great about us MTF CDers who identify as women; we can name ourselves. So, in the end, arrange and spell your name how ever you want; it’s your name, you’re the one that has to be happy with it.

    • #730346

My name was, I think given to me somehow, or at least my first name. I remember being about 11 or 12, and had recently started experimenting with dressing. I was an only child, so could only borrow my mums stuff while she was out.

Anyway, I remember having a diary or something and out of nowhere decided my name was Helen. I didn’t know anyone by that name, it just came out of nowhere. And its been Helen ever since. It just feels like thats who I’m meant to be.

As for my surname, thats my grandmother’s maiden name. So for a middle name, as I’m a bit of a princess sometimes, it had to be Rebecca (though it could have been Rachel) – which gives me initials of HRH…..

Coincidentally, I went to a pizza restaurant and out front was an old car that had seen better days. It had a licenceplate with the short name of restaurant, plus the number 8. I did not recognise the car and took a closer look. Suicide door handles, right-hand drive, a classic British look from a long time ago. The hood ornament was a stylish A and on the back bumper was the word Princess. It was an Austin Princess limousine.

AnnaBeth, I cannot tell you what you should do, I cannot even decide what I should do!

I have found several names on my path. I think that they are perfect and they are, until they aren’t. I couldn’t decide when I joined this site. So where did Autumn Gold come from? I used to vacation with a few friends. There was a local beer brewed in the fall called Autumn Gold that we liked. I am not a big drinker, but a cold one around a campfire with good friends was a nice memory. They no longer brew Autumn Gold. It’s been gone for years. So that is my name for now.

I think Autumn Gold is a very pretty name. Thank you for your response, I thought it would be fun to hear how other girls came up with their names and it has been. There have been many unique ways to come up with a name.

Some one told me it’s your name so you can spell it any way you like, and that what I have done but I really don’t mind if people shorten it to Anna. It is convenient to have a shorter name sometimes especially in the chat room.

I don’t know if my name selection story is interesting, but I’ll share anyway.

When I decided to create my first online account (on another site), I hadn’t even considered that I’d need a female name.  I was stopped dead in my tracks by the sign-up form….utterly clueless what to put down.  Being the analytical type, I proceeded to find the “perfect” name.  As you might guess, this went nowhere fast.  By the end of the day I had no name, no account, and a memorable headache.  I downed some Tylenol and a shot of Makers and slept on it.

Renewed and refreshed the next morning, Emily popped into my head.  That’s who I would be.  But then what to do about a last name?  Not wanting to repeat the previous day’s frustration, I started thinking about words that might describe my alternative lifestyle.  That’s when it struck me.  Alt.  Short for alternative.  I would be Emily Alt!

So there you have it.  The story of how Emily got her name.

As an aside, I chose my name before I realized I was trans.  I now have to consider what my legal name will be.  There’s a good chance it won’t be Emily.  More to be revealed….

        just saying.

    • #730571

No problem, let me help you with that.

      it’s spelled, A n n a B e t h, OR, you could spell it A n n a b e t h. Either way works fine really, your choice. I like both.

Yep,sure do. I thought hard and long about a name before I had a name . People used to just call me ‘her’ and I didn’t think that was very innovative so I thought some more cause up until then, my thinking wasn’t helping much really, so after thinking, more, I finally came up with a name.  Blonde.  That was it, Blonde. After eavesdropping numerous times at work, I always heard people in their little groups say, “ she must be blonde”. So, that’s how I got my name.
Ok, so after being Blonde for awhile, something just didn’t seem right. I still couldn’t join one of those clickish groups at work, so I decided to think some more about this. So I thought about Jack and Jill and the hill and all that stuff in that non fiction story my sister read to me at night and I thought to myself, “ what if Jack went up the hill and Jill came down the hill?” and the story book got it aaaaallllll wrong!! Eh?!! What if they were the same person all along eh, eh, eh? What if, eh? Sooooooo, to make a long story short, that’s how I got most of my name.  See, my real name is Jillleanne. I figured I didn’t want to get in trouble with copyright issues and that kind of stuff, sooooooooooooI did some more thinking and said to myself, “self? I need to improve my name so I don’t get myself in trouble like I USUALLY DO WHEN I THINK ABOUT STUFF”, oops, how did that happen now? Anyway I thought what if I took twooooooooo names and put them together, just like you did, and make one really cool name? Eh? Eh? Pretty smart of me right? Right? Can I get an AMEN?

so I came up with Jill of course and I added Leanne and made Jillleanne! How cool was that?  Pretty darn smart eh? Eh? Better get up earlier in the morning than that if you want to keep up to me, right? Right?

So now when I eavesdrop at work, they still call me Blonde but I don’t care ‘cause I know my real name is the one and only, Jillleanne and I think that’s just fine! Oh yeah, you can call me Jill too!

      Jillleanne

“Does anyone have an interesting story on how they picked their name?” AnnaBeth

I found this thread while searching for a place to mention the story behind the Johnny Cash song, “A Boy Named Sue“. It wasn’t a Johnny Cash original and the inspiration for the original lyrics were suggested by another man named Jean, but it was quite successful and many of you would recognise it.

The funny thing is that there really was a man named Sue. He was a famous lawyer involved with the John Scopes trial. It is an interesting rabbit hole of history to dig into these people and their history.

Now, on to my own acquired femme name. From a coincidence of digging into my family’s history, I realised that my mother was more than likely named after her father, Harold / Harry. (I mean, how else would a French name get picked by an English/American family?😄) She isn’t around anymore to ask her about this. Dad frequently called her Harrie, too. So, because I also used to be quite hairy, I chose to honour my mother by assuming her name.

Thanks for your response Harriette, I find it very interesting that a boy named sue wasn’t originally written for Johnny Cash, I’ve been a Johnny Cash fan since 1968 when I bought my first album. I love that you honored your mother by taking her name.

Hi all! My name was given to me by my late wife. I am Ragina. I added a middle name quite by accident. A friend challenged me to start performing in drag. I needed a stage name, so I took the shortened name Gina and combined it with Marie to become Ginamarie. Another drag friend had the surname Cartier and she adopted me into the Cartier clan, so now I perform as Ginamarie Cartier. I’m keeping it. As I’m now socially transitioning, I now call myself Ragina Marie Cartier.

    • #756165

      Hi girls

I tried a few first names before that were close to the boy name, but I always thought of something that would be distinctively feminine.

Rachel was always that, but I wanted to get even more girly, so thus Rachelle was born (hatched? 🙂 )

The last name is my birth last name – not the name I go by.

I did not have a femme name until the early 80’s. Catherine, (Caty), came to me when  a couple we knew left their primary school age kids at our house on their way to a formal ball. This Catherine was wearing a lovely flowing apricot chiffon full length ball gown. hair and make up were of course immaculate.

From that day on I was Catherine, (Caty) and eventually bought my own version of that gown.

Like (I suspect) many of the ladies out there, I went through quite a few names before I settled on my current personna… which probably won’t be my last. In the past I’ve been named after a girl I really, really fancied (but who wouldn’t give me the time of day!) an old girlfriend (who dumped me at the first sign of someone else having a lot of money) a famous nude model (who I still think is the most beautiful woman ever to have lived) and now – well, add “Holly Marie” to me being “Hottestwitch” – to anyone who was around in the late 1990s, it’s not exactly difficult to work out (and yes HOTTEST was – and still is – definitely correct!) I suspect that most of the ladies out there choose their names just because they like the sound of it, rather than after anyone specific – but AnnaBeth is a truly brilliiant name! Love you: Holly XXX

I wanted to be female since early childhood and must have given myself a few girls names in childhood and my teenage years.Although, when I was about six or seven I had a lovely dream in which I had turned into a little girl called Barbara.Never thought about calling myself that again. When I was in early adulthood,I toyed with the names Andrea and Denice. One day in my early twenties, I had a great time dressed in one of my mum’s dresses and tights,I invented the persona Sharon Webster. One name that stuck with me for years was Belinda.I worked with a girl in my office who was a couple of years younger than me.Sbe always wore nice heels and pantyhose.I wanted to be her.My current name,Roberta came to me about twenty years ago when I was lying in bed having the usual fantasies of being a woman and bemoaning my lack of dressing opportunities.I just thought that it was a cute and oh so girly name.I have stuck with it since then.My wife calls me Roberta when I am dressed.

Thank you so much AnnaBeth sweetie.Yes,that childhood dream of me being a girl called Barbara is very dear to me.It is so sweet. Not like the crossdressing dreams that I have had in adulthood. In one such dream,I told all my female work colleagues at my former workplace that I was a crossdresser. We all went out to celebrate at a restaurant.I thought I looked gorgeous in my lovely dress but when I looked at myself in the mirror of the ladies restroom,my makeup had ran and I looke ghastly.Love the name Annabeth.Very feminine!!

I understand your adult dream too. I can use a lot of smoke and mirrors and make myself look so pretty. But then I look in the mirror and see the old man in a dress.

      Vanessa ?
      Lady

The name “Vanessa” was suggested to me by a random stranger online, oddly enough.  I asked on another site what people thought would be a good girl-name for me when I was first starting out crossdressing in July or early August of 2019, and that was one of several suggestions I got.  My girlfriend at the time (who was, and still is even after the breakup, supportive of me crossdressing) asked about what name I’d want to go by in girl-mode and I told her about how I hadn’t decided yet but I’d been asking around for suggestions, so I mentioned a few of them to her.

I can’t remember what the first suggestion I brought up was anymore, but the second was Vanessa, and her face just lit up when she heard it and she was immediately like “that’s it, that’s the one.”  Shortly after she donated a little baggie of various makeup and related things, including a tiny little handwritten card from her addressed to Vanessa.

In addition to her reaction to that name being so immediately positive, I had already liked Vanessa more than… whatever the other suggestions had been, and more than several names that I had bouncing around as possibilities in my head.  So I decided to go ahead and start calling myself Vanessa whenever I dressed up from that point on.

I have always loved romantic sounding names. I chose Genivieve because I liked the way it sounds and it sounds romantic to me. I changed the spelling to make it my own! 😊

Cerys Matthews, the singer from the band Catatonia. Like me, she’s Welsh. Unlike me, she’s gorgeous and has an amazing voice both when singing and talking.
I wanted a Welsh name, but one that no friends or family had.It also had to be someone I admired. Cerys fitted the bill nicely.
It’s also the name that was top of the list if my son was born a girl.
Sadly, my wife doesn’t want me to use a name, so I’m only Cerys on here. I occasionally give it, if I’m in girl mode, on my own in a coffee shop.

Cerys is based on the Welsh word caru, to love.

I didn’t know how to pronounce the name so I looked it up – ker-es. A lovely name.

Hi Sharon, thank you for responding. I like the way you picked out your name and envy the way you live your life the way you want. I would love to wear a skirt when I felt like it but I pretty happy that I can wear one at home when I want to.

        hugs

Jessica I believe you are too young to have attended Orwell’s boot camp on Newspeak….

My compliments on your attempt to preserve that declining model of linguistic minimalism and obfuscation!

oh I got you on your first post Jessica.  I’ve been holding back.  It’s been fun watching you twist language in ways I haven’t seen since, well, the last time I read 1984!
