This is great Suzanne! I grew up, much as you describe, in a small town in Louisiana, which was very restrictive and homophobic. Glad to hear of another who managed to rise above that environment.

Great story and sage advice. My confidence began building when I chose to style my hair the same everyday and always wearing earrings.It never hurt being addressed as, “Ma’am” even when unexpected, putting a bit of spring in my step.
